Nearly 40,000 persons live in more than 800 nursing, assisted-living, and personal care facilities in the ten counties of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Fewer than 30 chaplains are employed--many only part-time--to serve these people. Studies report that 50-60% of long-term care residents never get visited by anyone, and the three realities for many older adults in LTC facilities are loneliness, boredom, and depression.

RICS presently oversees three part-time chaplains in four settings. The Rev. Margarethe Galbraith-Cordes serves older adult residents and staff at McMurray Hills Manor in McMurray, PA The Very Rev. George York serves older adult residents and staff at Anderson Manor, on the north side of Pittsburgh, PA. The Rev. Ronald Turner serves older mentally ill and developmentally challenged adults at Plumwood and Timothy Place in Plum Boro, PA.
